Deep Space Destructors: I

29/08/12  ||  gk

This EP starts with a quite beautiful fuzzed out guitar tone that’s pure 70’s rock and left me thinking that Deep Space Destructors were going to be another quality stoner rock band. I was right about the quality bit but DSD are not just another stoner rock band. Right through this 4 song offering, the band are quite difficult to pin down. Take ”Black star rising” for example. The song starts all fuzzed out and doomy but seamlessly changes pace and incorporates a bunch of diverse elements making it a memorable song with a great vocal line. Elements of 70’s rock, doom, 90’s alt rock and a spacey almost prog rock vibe all sit together quite comfortably.

The songs are catchy with some really cool vocal lines and the trio manage to bring together their various influences into one cohesive whole. What makes “I” even more impressive is that this is just the bands debut recording of any sort. The songwriting is evolved, the trio stay far away from genre clichés and show real promise. Deep Space Destructors are a band to watch out for. “I” may not be perfect but it is a damn good start.

7,5/10: Looking forward to more.
